The Patterdale Terrier is a rare breed from the North of England first
brought to the United States in 1970's. Long bred for working ability
rather than appearance, it is a very hardy and courageous dog used
for hunting ground dwelling vermin. Despite its origin as a small game
hunter the Patterdale is known for being perky, devoted, and loving.
These terriers are also generally good with children who have been
taught not to tease the dog. Indoors they are considerably more laid
back and less "yippy" than most other terrier breeds. Although
Patterdale's can be stubborn in they're youth , and therefore a bit
difficult to train, they mature quickly. Be aware, however, that the
Patterdale is a big dog in a small package and not a breed for the
inexperienced dog owner.
My own experience with this breed has been quite enjoyable. They are
very affectionate, have an overwhelming desire to please, they love to
play with balls and other toys and are at their very best during the hunt.
